In a historic moment for community radio, the Victorian State Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding recognizing UGFM as Australia's first Community Radio Emergency Broadcaster.
A National First
This recognition makes UGFM the first community radio station in Australia to receive official emergency broadcaster status. The MOU formalizes the partnership between UGFM and Emergency Management Victoria, establishing protocols for emergency broadcasting during bushfires and other emergencies.
What This Means
As an official emergency broadcaster, UGFM:
- Receives priority access to emergency information from authorities
- Is included in official emergency communication plans
- Has direct links to emergency services and coordination centers
- Provides localized emergency information that complements ABC Local Radio
- Maintains backup broadcast capabilities for emergency situations
Building on Black Saturday
This recognition came as a direct result of UGFM's exemplary performance during the Black Saturday bushfires. Our ability to provide localized, immediate information to communities across the Murrindindi region demonstrated the vital role community radio can play in emergency management.
Ongoing Commitment
UGFM continues to invest in emergency broadcast capabilities, including backup power systems, mobile broadcast equipment, and presenter training. We remain committed to serving our community in times of emergency.
